In his career he started playing in Clube Maxaquene, in Mozambique, and moved to Benfica. In Benfica he played 302 matches and made history becoming the topscorer of the club. He also played for Boston Minutemen, Monterrey, Toronto, Beira-Mar, Las Vegas, Uniao de Tomar and New Jersey. From 1961 to 1973 he played in the portuguese national team. He won 11 times the portuguese league, 5 times the portuguese national cup, 5 times the honor portuguese cup and 2 times the european cup. Individually, he won the Ballon d'Or.
